Meet The Wooden Doll No.1

by Vitra

Alexander Girard’s Wooden Dolls are a charming collection of wooden figures representing human and animal characters. Originally designed in 1952 for his Santa Fe home, these dolls are now part of the Vitra Design Museum. They’ve inspired current re-editions that are precisely replicated down to the last detail. Each doll is handmade and painted just like the vintage pieces by Alexander Girard. Each doll is a unique treasure and truly one of a kind.

How are we made?

The making of dolls is a deeply ingrained human practice that is virtually ubiquitous throughout recorded history. Wooden dolls have been discovered in the tombs of Ancient Egyptians dating back to as early as 2030 BC. Across continents and cultures, dolls have been found to play a part in our lives; from religious ceremonies or education to magic, ritual, play, protection and of course decoration.

You can therefore imagine that it was no real surprise when we opened a box in the archive of the Vitra Design Museum some 15 years ago and discovered Girard’s own set of wooden dolls. Though we had never seen them as children in our grandparents’ home they were immediately familiar.

It is not difficult to understand why these objects have become so beloved. The desire to recognise our human experience in the world around us is eternal. This quirky, colourful family spans the range of human emotions and is a reminder that we are part of a collective, something larger than ourselves.

Meet Our Creator

Alexander Girard (1907-1993)

Born in New York City, Alexander Girard was one of the leading figures of postwar American design, along with his close friends and colleagues, George Nelson and Charles & Ray Eames. His passion for colours, patterns and textures found expression in the field of textile design, which was a focal part of his oeuvre.

The primary focus of his wide-ranging oeuvre was textile design. Girard created numerous fabrics for the Herman Miller Company, favouring abstract forms and geometric patterns in a wide variety of colour compositions. Many of his upholstery fabrics remain as timely and vital as ever and are still manufactured and utilised by Vitra today.

The growing Girard collection in Vitra's product portfolio includes his painted Wooden Dolls, the Environmental Enrichment Panels and various furniture pieces and objects, along with his distinctive fabric designs.
